The New Orleans Saints have 34 sacks this season, indicating that they need some help with their pass rush.
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin believes the Saints will chase Baltimore Ravens edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney in free agency this year.
Clowney had an excellent year with the Ravens in 2023, appearing in all games and recording 43 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and five passes deflected.
The 31-year-old, who played NCAA football at the University of South Carolina, was originally taken first overall by the Houston Texans in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Clowney played only four games as a rookie because to injuries, but the next year he featured in 13 games and recorded 40 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Clowney then made his first of three consecutive Pro Bowl selections in 2016, recording 52 tackles, six sacks, and a forced fumble.
Clowney never had more than 9.5 sacks between 2016 and 2018, although he did have 59 tackles, a handful of forced fumbles, a pair of fumble recoveries, and a defensive score in 2017.
After starting his career with the Texans for five years, Clowney has become something of a journeyman.
He played one season for the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, recording 31 tackles, three sacks, an interception, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two defensive touchdowns.
Clowney subsequently joined the Tennessee Titans in 2020, but injuries limited him to eight games. He then joined the Cleveland Browns for two years, culminating in a strong comeback season in 2021, when he recorded 37 tackles and nine sacks.
Following a difficult second season with the Browns in 2022, Clowney moved to Baltimore.
The Saints have a terrible salary cap situation, so we’ll see if they can even afford to sign Clowney to a short-term contract in the coming weeks.
