As the NFL Combine begins this week, Falcons officials are likely mixing with other executives about the possibility of trading up in the NFL draft.
Last week, Steve Wyche and Daniel Jeremiah mentioned that they expect Terry Fontenot to be aggressive in trading up the board. On Monday, Wyche reiterated his position, telling 92.9 The Game’s Dukes and Bell that he has been informed that the Falcons will be aggressive in going up and picking their quarterback.
My thoughts instantly turn to the Bears, Commanders, and Patriots, who have the first picks in the draft. Many anticipate the first three picks will be Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels, in some order.
However, in his farewell column, Peter King dropped this nugget: “I presume the Bears will trade the first pick. I know nothing, but that appears to be the direction the wind is blowing.”
It wasn’t a report, but King went on to elaborate on his prediction that Chicago will trade down to Washington’s No. 2 pick and then again to Atlanta’s No. 8 pick, trading down twice.
The Falcons would then be in a position to select a top quarterback prospect. Caleb Williams is expected to still go first, leaving Atlanta with a choice between Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels.
The second question many people have is how much it will cost. With starters, it would include two first-round picks plus a player, similar to the package the Bears acquired from the Panthers with the first pick last year.
It would probably cost more, but you get the point: moving up to any of the first three picks will require a significant investment of capital.
