JUST IN: Bears GM hints at timeline for Justin Fields trade decision

It sounds like the Chicago Bears may make a choice much sooner than the two months they have left to decide what to do with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles discussed the team’s pressing quarterback issue with the media on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. When asked whether Chicago is eager to move before free agency begins in the unlikely event that they decide to deal Justin Fields, he gave a glowing assessment of the player. Poles said that by then, he would rather have clarity.

Again, Poles remarked, “It just depends on what opportunities pop up.” I will say this, though: I believe you all now know me sufficiently. I want to treat Justin correctly too, if that’s the route we take. Nobody desires to live in the greys. That’s uncomfortable, I know. That’s not a scenario I would want to be in either. We won’t be in a hurry, so we’ll gather the facts and proceed as soon as we can to see what opportunities arise and what would be ideal for the company.
Talks between teams and free agents can start on March 11. After that, players can begin signing contracts on March 13. The Bears have fewer than two weeks to decide on Fields before the start of the legal tampering period.

Free agents will want to know Chicago’s plans before signing, even though Poles may sincerely want to do the right thing by Fields. If the Bears keep Fields, there are certain players who might be more likely to sign with them. Some would favour using Caleb Williams, the unanimous first overall choice.

Fields should receive a ton of offers in the upcoming days. The former Ohio State standout is reportedly attracting serious interest from at least one AFC franchise.
