As the NFL combine begins this week, the draft buzz continues to grow. With that comes more speculation about which team will grab quarterback Caleb Williams, the expected No. 1 overall choice in April’s draft.
The Chicago Bears control the first pick, and while most in the league expect they would choose Williams, there is still a chance that Chicago could remain with incumbent starter Justin Fields at centre.
If the Bears hold the first overall pick and do not select Williams, the Washington Commanders are the next likely destination for the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner. The Commanders are scheduled to choose second in the draft and are expected to consider selecting a quarterback.
Williams, who grew up in the Washington, D.C. region, is willing to play for his hometown team.
“It’d be really cool because it’s so familiar,” Williams told Pete Thamel. “There is a time and place for everything.” My profession and pastime both include being at the facility, on the field, or viewing films. Alternatively, you might relax and prepare for the next day or game.
“My main goal and focus … is to go win games and stay focused on keeping the main goal the main goal.”
Moving back home does not appear to be a distraction for Williams, who is primed to prove himself as the NFL’s next big thing. Given the Bears and Commanders’ recent records, there have been rumours that he will try to force a trade to a specific team. Williams dismissed such notion, saying he is pleased about the opportunity to play for any organization.
The Commanders have not won a playoff game since 2005 and frequently rank near the bottom in attendance. Bringing in Caleb Williams would change that, and with the attitude he brings to the pros, a playoff win is possible as well.
