The New York Giants are expressing interest in the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, one NFL analyst believes that the Giants could improve the position through free agency instead.
Bucky Brooks of NFL.com recently mentioned the Giants as a top landing point for veteran quarterback and former Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson. The Denver Broncos’ signal-caller is anticipated to be released this summer, making him one of the top quarterbacks available in free agency. Brooks believes the Giants may be a good fit for Wilson, giving the 35-year-old a legitimate shot at a championship.
Could the Giants look to sign Russell Wilson in free agency?
Despite having only traded for Wilson last offseason, the Denver Broncos are expected to cut him this offseason in order to save money. Wilson led the Broncos to a 7-8 record in 15 starts in 2023, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, and eight interceptions during the season.
Wilson can still play at a high level, but he is not the same player he once was. Wilson was regarded as one of the league’s top quarterbacks throughout his time with the Seattle Seahawks (2012–2021), having won a Super Bowl and appearing in nine Pro Bowls in ten years.
Signing Wilson will most likely be easier than one might think. Wilson is allegedly willing to accept a large pay cut and sign an NFL minimum deal if the Broncos cut him this offseason. The Giants have approximately $30 million in salary cap room this summer, so signing Wilson on a low-cost contract would be no problem.
However, he would be joining a quarterback room now commanded by the Giants’ $160 million man, Daniel Jones, and may compete with him and another rookie quarterback in 2024. This might make New York a less appealing option for Wilson as he reaches the end of his career and hopes to continue playing as a starter.
