Enrique (Kiké) Hernandez has recently agreed to re-sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers during MLB free agency. Hernandez is a fan favourite in Los Angeles, and Dodgers supporters were thrilled to learn that he would return for the 2024 season. Hernandez’s versatility provides manager Dave Roberts with further roster flexibility. During an appearance on Foul Territory, Hernandez said that the New York Yankees were one of his free agent suitors.
“At the end it came down to the Dodgers or the Yankees, big market only, but I chose the Dodgers because they have a lot of left handed hitters,” Hernandez told ESPN. “I was already late to spring, and I didn’t have to pack my bags, fly to Florida, and move my family across the country, but the Dodgers’ presence in Arizona was convenient, and they have a lot of left-handed hitters in their lineup.”
“The key reason is that they were able to promise that I would start at least once against left-handed pitchers to begin the season, and from there, anything could happen. The Yankees have a really good lineup, just like the Dodgers, but they have a lot of right-handed hitters and their lefties are not platoon players.”
Hernandez feels he’ll get more playing time in LA. He is familiar with the American League East, having spent the previous few seasons with the Boston Red Sox, so a move to New York should have been manageable. But he was moved to Los Angeles in 2023 and will return to the Dodgers in 2024.
