With the Washington Commanders possessing the most cap space in the NFL this offseason, they have several alternatives to improve their roster. The first item of business will be to draft a quarterback, given they have the second pick in the draft. Adding receivers around whoever they choose will be critical, and a veteran like Mike Evans may be an excellent fit for them. While Evans may be interested in playing for a competitive club, the Commanders may be better sooner than expected if they locate a quarterback.
Evans is expected to sign a four-year contract worth $95,343,536, according to Spotrac. That cost would not be an issue for the Commanders. With his impending free agency, Tony Catalina of Pro Football Network identified the Commanders as one of three potential landing locations for Evans.
“Unlike the last two locations, it would not be a ready-made situation, but the Washington Commanders have money to spend and are commanded by a fresh set of commanders who want to go in the correct path.
“Historically, the Washington franchise has not been hesitant to spend big money in free agency, and it may have to do so again to entice Evans in this situation. But with the second overall pick in the draft, a lot of money to spend, and Dan Quinn in charge, there are considerably worse circumstances than the one in the nation’s capital.”
Catalina implies that the Commanders may need to overpay, but that is the reality of the situation for a team that has suffered in recent seasons. If they were to overpay someone, a player of his stature would be great.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers want to re-sign Evans.
Evans has spent every season of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they re-signed him. Evans has also produced more than almost any other wide receiver in football, averaging more than 1,000 yards every season. Evans was the first player to start his career with ten straight seasons of more over 1,000 yards.
General manager Jason Licht provided an update on the Buccaneers’ contract talks with Evans.
“How recent was that?” Another one claimed we were getting close [laughter]. We are working really hard on that. Mike is wanted by everyone on both sides.”
With the Buccaneers still hammering out details with Evans, the Washington Commanders may have to persuade him to play in Washington. It’s a challenging sell, as seen by their poor marks on the NFLPA report card.

The Washington Commanders require a player of Evans’ calibre to assist them speed up the rebuild. With Dan Quinn as the new head coach and an expected rookie quarterback, Evans would make things much easier for everyone.
