BREAKING NEWS: Proposed Blockbuster Trade Lands Commanders Dual-Threat QB From Bears

The Washington Commanders must make a decision with the No. 2 overall pick. With over $90 million in cap space, the team has more than enough money to develop around its quarterback. If they take a quarterback with the second overall choice, they should be able to add weapons around him. While drafting a quarterback appears to be the most likely scenario, there is a possibility that the Commanders will trade or sign one. That concept surfaced again when Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire conducted a mock draft in which the Commanders made a surprising pick after dealing for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.

Farrar’s hypothetical case involves the Commanders trading Fields with the Bears. Farrar does not include the package that would return to the Bears.

“The Commanders trade with the Bears for Justin Fields and, in a surprise move, choose LSU receiver Malik Nabers over Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. as the first receiver. Harrison goes to the Cardinals with the fourth overall pick, and with the Bears picking Brian Thomas Jr. ninth overall, it’s a big day for LSU!”

Justin Fields trade rumors: These three NFL teams have already shown interest in a possible deal for Bears QB - CBSSports.com

The team could consider trading for Fields, but it would be shocking if they drafted Malik Nabers above Marvin Harrison Jr. Many believe Harrison is the finest wide receiver in this draft class, having played at a Heisman-caliber level in college.

What could Justin Fields offer the Commanders?
Fields would give the Washington Commanders a young quarterback with the potential to be an above-average quarterback in the NFL.

While this has not always been the case, Fields may gain from being part of a new system.

The Commanders may be interested by his tools, as he carried for 1,143 yards in the 22 season. Fields threw 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions for 2,562 yards in 2023. He gained another 657 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

The signs have been there for him, but it’s difficult to rationalize passing on a quarterback with the first choice.

Something that appears to be overlooked in the Chicago Bears situation is that trading Fields and drafting Caleb Williams isn’t necessarily a negative reflection on Fields. Williams would be on a rookie contract for a few more years than Fields, allowing the organization to spend money elsewhere while paying a low quarterback salary.

If they keep Fields and commit to him, it might be a major financial choice in the future.

Rookie contracts are incredibly valuable throughout the league, and a new one for Williams may benefit the Bears.

What would the Commanders need to trade for the Bears?

Justin Fields trade rumors: Four teams linked to Bears QB
It is unclear what kind of value Fields has across the league. For the Washington Commanders, now might be the perfect time to trade for him. From the Chicago Bears’ perspective, now may be the worst time to move him.

His worth is at an all-time low, which might impact the Bears.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic recently polled eight NFL executives and coaches to determine the value of the Chicago Bears’ quarterbacks.

“The majority of respondents believe the Bears would acquire a second- or third-round pick, but there was significant variety in their comments. One executive stated that he would be worth a second-round pick or its equivalent value in exchange for a third- and fifth-round pick.

The Commanders must make a difficult decision that will have far-reaching consequences for the franchise’s future.
