The Houston Texans will be busy this offseason, as many key players are scheduled to hit the free agent market. However, it looks like at least one of those players plans to return. According to KPRC 2, the Texans and tight end Dalton Schultz have a mutual desire to continue working together, and he will “be back” on the club in 2024.
While the Texans rarely use the franchise tag, Schultz might be a contender if a deal isn’t struck by the impending deadline, as the tag costs $11.3 million. Schultz, known as a reliable downfield target, had 59 receptions, 635 yards, and five touchdowns on 88 targets last season. After five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Schultz signed a one-year contract with the Houston Texans, where he emerged as the team’s third-leading receiver.
According to Spotrac, the Texans have a stunning $70 million in expected cap space, allowing them to potentially offer Schultz the big contract he requested last season. Texans General Manager Nick Caserio emphasized the importance of considering the franchise tag’s fixed value as a starting point for negotiations, saying, “it’s a little cat-and-mouse game, so you just try to take the information in, have a general understanding of the market, and try to make a good decision.”
