“The 49ers are interested in bringing back edge rusher Chase Young, who was a bit of a disappointment for them following their deadline deal to acquire him from Washington but is still only 24 and has a great relationship with star 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa.” (They were college teammates.
“Young might end up having to take a one-year prove-it deal, be it from San Francisco or someone else, but there are enough teams still intrigued by the 2020 No. 2 overall pick’s potential.”
There is still potential for the former commander’s number two pick.
With Young demonstrating during his early career, this is an excellent opportunity for a team to get a potential steal on the free agent market.
According to Graziano, Young might sign a one-year prove-it contract, making it even more attractive for a team to take a chance on the soon-to-be 25-year-old.
The injuries have been a concern, but if Young can provide a team with anything close to what he did for the Washington Commanders in his first season, they will be more than satisfied. It’s unclear whether he can be that type of player, as he hasn’t been since his rookie season.
Even though he had 5 sacks in 7 games for the Commanders, his explosiveness and athleticism were not as strong as they had been during his rookie season. That was proven true by the San Francisco 49ers.
However, Young’s problems with the 49ers could have been attributed to his switching teams in the middle of the season and playing for a new team for the first time in his career.
Commanders traded Young at the Perfect Time.
The Washington Commanders have made numerous mistakes during the last few years. Under new ownership, their goal is to correct many of the faults made by previous owners.
The first step for them was relocating Young, who, in retrospect, was traded at the ideal time. Given that he needed a new contract this summer, dealing him when they did was the best option.
It’s unfortunate that the partnership ended the way it did after such a promising start for any participant, but it’s part of the business.
Young will reach free agency for the first time in his career, with the option of signing with a new team or re-signing with the 49ers. Hopefully, he can stay healthy and be one of football’s top defensive players, as promised.
