The Bears’ two-year pursuit of offensive tackle Ryan Bates has finally paid off.
Chicago completed the transaction with the Bills, obtaining Bates in return for a fifth-round pick in the upcoming 2024 draft, the Bills confirmed.
The transaction is scheduled to be consummated on March 13, subject to a physical.
This deal brings to an end the Bears’ prior attempt to sign Bates as a restricted free agent in 2022, when they signed him to an offer sheet only to have Buffalo match it.
Bates, who spent five seasons with the Bills, had a remarkable resume, appearing in 73 games and starting 19. Despite not making any starts in 2023, he remained a key asset, appearing in 17 games.
Bates adds depth to the Bears’ offensive line, while the Bills acquire 10 picks in the future 2024 draft.
