One of Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud’s favourite weapons will stay with the team for the foreseeable future.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Texans agreed on Tuesday to a three-year, $36 million contract with tight end Dalton Schultz. Schultz will reportedly receive $23.5 million in completely guaranteed compensation at signing.
Schultz played his first five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. The Stanford product rose to become the Cowboys’ top tight end option, but he was unable to agree to a contract extension with the team that drafted him last year, forcing him to become free agent.
Schultz signed a one-year agreement with the Texans last summer and made a positive impact on the squad. Across 15 games, the 27-year-old grabbed 59 catches for 635 yards and five scores.
Stroud developed a deep bond with Schultz throughout their first year together. The Texans tight end had the second-most targets (88), trailing only breakout wide receiver Nico Collins (109).
Schultz was also second on the squad in first down conversions (35), frequently acting as a solid release valve for Stroud in pressure situations.
With Schultz returning and wide receiver Tank Dell recovering from his season-ending injury, Stroud and the Texans will try to build on a successful 2023 season.
