Everything coming out of the scouting combine suggests that the Chicago Bears are done with Justin Fields. They will find a way to sell him in the coming weeks, allowing GM Ryan Poles to select his choice quarterback in the draft. Another widely held assumption in the NFL is that the Bears have also made their decision on that front. Caleb Williams from USC will make the announcement. They enjoy his video and have had no negative impressions from speaking with him or those who have worked closely with him.
However, one plotline persists in the background. What about the Washington commanders? They are ranked second overall, and rumour has it that they are working hard to persuade the Bears to consider switching picks in order to draft Williams. Greg Gabriel, former scouting director, acknowledged the chance exists. What might complicate matters is if the quarterback decides to press the issue. According to Adam Jahns of The Athletic, several people close to him and his family believe it cannot be ruled out.
Everything depends on the Bears’ assessment of Caleb Williams.
That is, how much of a gap exists between him and the other top quarterbacks in this class? If he outperforms everyone else, it’s difficult to imagine the Bears doing anything other than drafting him. If the deficit is tight, Poles may consider accepting Washington’s generous offer and going with Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. It’s worth noting that the Bears only have five picks remaining in the 2024 draft. Poles often prefer to operate in groups of roughly ten. Perhaps he was planning a move all along.
