The Los Angeles Rams were in the bottom five in the NFL in terms of sacks last season, so signing an edge rusher in free agency should benefit the squad. Brian Burns, a guy the organization has been interested in for some time, was tagged by the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. Bryce Huff, a free agent with the New York Jets, may be a more realistic possibility for the Rams right now.
Despite not starting a single game, this season was Huff’s first meaningful playing action since being undrafted in 2020. But now that the rest of the league has seen what he can accomplish, he may be an excellent match for the Rams. Huff had 10 sacks in little under 350 snaps this season. He was also third in the league in pass rush win rate and has a consistent ability to get to the quarterback, which the Rams may benefit from.
While there may be better possibilities for edge rushers on the free agency market, they would all be more expensive. However, because this was his first year of continuous activity, Huff’s salary will remain relatively modest, allowing the Rams to acquire a rising star at a reasonable cost. Whether the Rams sign an under-the-radar player like Huff or go out and snag one of the top dogs, addressing the defensive end position might be critical to the team’s success next season.
