Months after switching ownership from controversial Daniel Snyder to a group led by billionaire Josh Harris and signing Dan Quinn to replace Ron Rivera as head coach, the Washington Commanders have a huge opportunity to alter their squad swiftly.
They will hold the No. 2 choice in the 2017 draft, giving them the opportunity to select a potential franchise quarterback.
Washington will almost probably not be able to draft Caleb Williams, but Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye should be available, and Rivera stated on ESPN’s “NFL Live” that Daniels should be the decision for his former club.
Rivera stated that new Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury prefers a mobile quarterback, and Daniels fits that mould.
Daniels threw for 3,812 yards with 40 touchdowns in 2023, with only four interceptions, and he also ran for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns for Louisiana State University.
There are some concerns regarding his weight being less than 200 pounds, but he appears to have nearly everything else in terms of basic talents to excel at the next level.
The Commanders last had a high-quality quarterback in 2012, when they selected Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick, only to have him suffer a devastating knee injury late in the season.
He was never the same again in the years that followed.
The Commanders will also have plenty of salary cap space to aid themselves at numerous positions, including wide receiver, offensive line, and defence.
If they employ these techniques wisely, they may be able to re-establish their success from the 1980s and early 1990s in the near future.
