DEAL AGREED: Commanders Have Reached Trade Agreement Cowboys top CB in a Blockbuster Trade

The Washington Commanders will most likely need more than one offseason to rebuild the roster and restock it with elite young talent, but general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn can set the groundwork this year through free agency and the draft. Stephon Gilmore, a Dallas Cowboys cornerback, could be on the Commanders’ radar. The veteran cornerback is slated to enter free agency this year, and Bleacher Report has him pegged as a “potential dream signing” for the Commanders.

“Washington has to add cornerback help, especially with Kendall Fuller slated to hit the market,” a report from Bleacher Report states. “Adding Stephon Gilmore from the Cowboys would make a lot of sense, both as a competent starter and as an experienced leader who might contribute in the locker room. This Commanders squad isn’t used to success, and Gilmore, a former Defensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl champion, can show Washington how to win.” Gilmore was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, and he has two All-Pro selections and five Pro Bowl appearances. In 2023, he recorded two interceptions for the third straight season and 13 passes defended for the Cowboys, his most since 2019. Gilmore has recorded multiple interceptions in ten of his 12 seasons. Outside of defensive tackle, the Commanders require any assistance they can get on defence. Washington ranked dead last in points and yards allowed per game, and 27th in running yards allowed per game. Gilmore can be a valuable asset at the backend of the Commanders’ defence, not only through his performance but also his leadership. Gilmore may be the ideal mentor for second-year cornerback Emmanuel Forbes, helping the 2023 first-round pick recover from a difficult rookie season.

His presence can also assist the Washington defence acclimatize to Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.’s plan. Solid veterans can form the foundation of a rebuilt squad. They can not only produce, but also mentor young players and demonstrate what it takes to succeed in the NFL. If Gilmore wanted to sign with the Commanders, they should be willing to go to whatever length to do so.
