The Saints and veteran offensive lineman James Hurst have reached an agreement to rework their contract. The Saints News Network discovered earlier this week that Hurst was revising his contract, and the new terms reduce Hurst’s base salary from $3 million to $1.21 million.
The cap hit will result in substantial savings for New Orleans, as it drops from $6.5 million to $2.971 million. The two void years are still in play for Hurst after this season, and they will be void if he is on the roster on the last day of the 2024 league year. Hurst will get a $1.5 million roster bonus this season.
Hurst, who has been with the Saints since 2020, was 31 in December and has played in 60 games for New Orleans. He has made 51 starts and brings variety and depth to the offensive line, particularly on the left side. Trevor Penning is not likely to move from left tackle right now, thus Hurst could be a viable option at left guard with Andrus Peat on the market.
