The initial buzz of NFL free agency may have passed, but teams are still busy filling up their rosters with impactful players on the market. The Cleveland Browns have already made significant moves, bringing in Jerry Jeudy and Jameis Winston while re-signing their key starters. They also lost a key special teamer, Mike Ford, on Wednesday but quickly replaced him.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Browns have agreed to sign cornerback and special teams ace Tony Brown to a one-year deal. Brown spent the previous two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, first under now-Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone. The two will reunite in Cleveland following a successful spell in Indianapolis.
Browns news: Cleveland signs CB and ST Ace Tony Brown
Brown was an undrafted free agent out of Alabama before joining the Green Bay Packers in 2018. With his stature and quickness, he was always a special teams player, but he also played a lot of defensive backfield in his early career.
Over the last two seasons, he has played virtually solely on special teams, with over 500 ST snaps and only 65 defensive snaps for the Colts.
Mike Ford, as good as he was for the Browns last season, got a two-year contract with the Houston Texans worth $4.5 million. That was too much money for a special teams player on a team with limited salary room, such as the Browns. It made more sense to look for a less expensive option, similar to what Cleveland did with Ford last season when they signed him in free agency.
