DONE DEAL: Cleveland Browns Sign Pro Bowl QB and Former Raven QB

The Cleveland Browns signed a Pro Bowl quarterback on Sunday, following a key choice at quarterback a few days earlier. The Browns have signed former first-round pick Jameis Winston as Deshaun Watson’s backup for the 2024 season.

The verdict effectively ruled out Joe Flacco’s return for the 2017 season.
The Cleveland Browns are closing the door on Joe Flacco.

According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, the Browns decided not to sign Flacco this summer because they were concerned that the team would rally behind Flacco over Watson.

As a result, the Browns shifted their focus to Winston because Flacco was unavailable. It was not worth the danger. Flacco was so electrifying in his short time here that he won over segments of the locker room faster than anyone expected. The harmony of those 53 matters far more than the backup quarterback.

Talk to any former player or league official, and they will at least recognize the fragility of the quarterback depth chart. When the starter struggles, especially if he doesn’t have a long track record of success, the locker room can easily fracture and players take sides.

It is not healthful and can soon become toxic. Nobody likes to discuss this on the record, but several veterans told me near the conclusion of last season that it would be difficult for the Browns to re-sign Flacco given Watson’s presence.

The Cleveland Browns signed another quarterback.
With Watson and Winston on the roster, the Browns added a third quarterback prior to OTAs this spring. According to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team, the Browns signed former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley.
Huntley brings Pro Bowl expectations to the Browns.
Huntly was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2022 for his great season, which included starting in place of the injured Lamar Jackson.

Huntley has passed for 1,957 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions throughout his four-year NFL career. Huntley will bring proven depth to the QB3 position.
