TheC have a new backup quarterback after signing experienced journeyman Joshua Dobbs on Monday. Dobbs and the Niners have agreed to a one-year contract worth $2.25 million plus $750,000 in playing-time incentives, according to NFL Network and ESPN.
Following Sam Darnold’s free agency departure to the Minnesota Vikings, Dobbs is slated to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Brock Purdy. Dobbs, 29, is coming off a one-of-a-kind season in which he was moved twice and started more games than any other time in his NFL career.
The Cleveland Browns traded Dobbs to the Arizona Cardinals at the end of training camp, while the latter awaited Kyler Murray’s return from injury. Dobbs started eight games, going 1-7, before being acquired by the Vikings prior to the trade deadline after Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles. In his first game with the Vikings, Dobbs replaced an injured Jaren Hall and led the team to a 31-28 comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
He ended up starting four more games, going 2-2. During his 13 games (12 starts), Dobbs passed for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He made his first two starts for the Tennessee Titans in the final two games of the 2022 season.
