DEAL AGREED: Falcon are Now in Final Stages of Signing Former Highest-Paid Safety in NFL Free Agency

Following the initial wave of free agency, the Falcons have addressed their top two positional needs: quarterback and wide receiver.

Terry Fontenot, Arthur Blank, and Raheem Morris mounted a full-court press for Kirk Cousins, defeating the Vikings for the veteran’s services. They followed up with a flurry of transactions, signing Darnell Mooney and Ray-Ray McCloud to contracts and trading for Rondale Moore.

That has effectively alleviated concerns about those two positions, but they are not the only ones that require attention. The edge and cornerback rooms require more bodies, and the safety room might benefit from another addition, depending on how the new coaching staff perceives DeMarcco Hellams and Richie Grant.
The safety market is competitive, and Adams has endured a string of injuries following a big trade from the Jets to the Seahawks.

Seattle sent New York two first-round picks in 2020, and the Hawks appeared to be on track as Adams recorded 9.5 sacks in his first season. However, injuries prevented him from reaching his full ability, particularly as teams began to exploit him in covering.

Adams missed 33 games over his four seasons with the Seahawks, but there is still room for him. He is not a reliable coverage player, but he is a hybrid safety who thrives in a sub-package linebacker role more than a typical safety position.

The Falcons will not be obtaining the man who the Seahawks signed to a four-year contract worth more than $70 million in 2021, making him the highest-paid safety in NFL history at the time.

He’ll certainly sign for a few million dollars and be eager to prove that his previous seasons were not indicative of the type of player he truly is. Jamal Adams’ career may be nearing its end rather than its peak, but if Raheem Morris and Jimmy Lake believe he still has some life in him, a one-year, prove-it deal could be worth considering.
