Chase Young, a defensive end who recently signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the New Orleans Saints, will have neck surgery on Thursday, according to Sports Illustrated. Young’s recovery time is three to five months, which means he’ll be ready for the start of the 2024 season if everything goes as planned. According to the source, the Saints were aware of the condition, which is believed to be the result of a stinger experienced during the 2023 preseason, and structured his contract appropriately.
Young is guaranteed $13 million if he is released. According to various publications, he will make somewhat more than $5 million in base pay, plus a roster bonus of $470,000 every game. If he plays all 17 games next season, he will earn the additional $7.99 million on his contract. Young, Washington’s No. 2 overall choice in the 2020 NFL Draft, was traded by the Commanders to the 49ers in October in return for a third-round draft pick. He appeared in nine regular-season games with San Francisco, totaling 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Young recorded 11 tackles during the 49ers’ playoff run, including a sack in the Super Bowl.
Young, 24, was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020 after making 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 15 games. However, his neck issue made it tough to find a team prepared to take the risk, according to Sports Illustrated. A ruptured right anterior cruciate ligament restricted him to nine appearances in 2021 and three in 2022. He returned to play seven games and start six for Washington last year, totaling 15 tackles and five sacks.
In 43 career NFL games (32 starts), Young has 100 tackles, 16.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.
