Cameron Sutton was released by the Detroit Lions on Thursday, as officials in Florida continue to search for the defensive back to serve a domestic abuse warrant.
The team announced the decision on the X social media site without providing any other information.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, which encompasses Tampa, has sought for assistance in locating Sutton, a seven-year pro who recently completed his debut season with the Lions and helped the team reach the NFC championship game for the first time in 32 years.
The warrant alleges domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in jail. The sheriff’s office believes Sutton may be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a Florida license plate.
Around 5 a.m. on March 7, the department responded to a call regarding domestic violence in progress between the 29-year-old Sutton and a female, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Authorities filed the order based on the evidence discovered, and they believe Sutton has departed Tampa, according to the newspaper.
It was unclear whether Sutton has a lawyer who can speak for him. A text message sent to Sutton’s agent, David Canter, was not promptly returned.
The warrant issued by the sheriff’s department was almost entirely blacked out; however, it did mention a residence belonging to him in Dunedin, Florida, on the Gulf Coast, and property records show him as the owner.
Sutton signed a $33 million, three-year contract with the Lions a little more than a year ago, with the expectation that he would be a critical player to acquire over the offseason. He helped the organization win its first division title in three decades, as well as two playoff games in a single postseason for the first time since 1957.
Sutton started all 17 regular-season games, recording a career-high 65 tackles and one interception. He also started the three postseason games.
Sutton started 31 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021-22 season, recording five interceptions and 95 tackles. The Steelers selected the former Tennessee standout, who is from Jonesboro, Georgia, in the third round in 2017. He has nine interceptions in 101 games over his career.
