Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff is strongly bent on replacing Lewis Hamilton with reigning Formula One champion Max Verstappen.
The 52-year-old is aware that he will have to replace the seven-time world champion, who will join Ferrari in 2025, and will undoubtedly pursue the Dutchman, who is aiming for his fourth title in a row this season, according to the Mirror.
The three-time F1 champion has had to deal with a slew of controversy at Red Bull this year, including an investigation into team head Christian Horner’s alleged inappropriate behavior with a female worker, which resulted in the Brit being cleared of all charges.
Wolff stated that he did not see the obvious potential of luring Verstappen to Mercedes as a reality a few months ago. “A few months ago, I didn’t expect that opportunity to exist at all,” the Austrian explained. “We anticipated Lewis may depart after this year when he signed his contract. But, at the same time, it gives us momentum now that we have options.
“As Lewis’ replacement, there are just a few drivers that interest us. Some drivers are cautious and will avoid making impulsive decisions.Nor will Max Verstappen decide on his future in the next weeks. At Red Bull, there is a situation. As a result, Max would most likely go to watch how the issue plays out,” he added.
