Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry are nearing the end of their first Cleveland Browns contracts.
Stefanski’s second NFL Coach of the Year award in 2023 sparked discussion of a speedy extension.
Berry’s draft record is far from great, but his free agency record and salary cap management have impressed many.
However, there hasn’t been any news or rumors regarding Berry and Stefanski being locked up beyond 2024.
Mary Kay Cabot, a Browns insider, discussed the subject with Dan Labbe on the Orange and Brown Podcast.
Cabot’s reasoning is simple: “They’ve been busy!”
The Cleveland.com beat reporter cites a plethora of post-season activities and chores to explain the delay.
However, she has little doubt that the Browns will eventually extend Berry and Stefanski.
“Maybe they’ll do something at the NFL Annual Meeting, maybe when they get home from there, or maybe it will be later today,” Cabot said. “But one way or another, those two guys are going to get their extensions.”
Berry and Stefanski are already defying the odds by going into their fifth season.
In 2020, front office guru Paul DePodesta underlined the need of continuity to owner Jimmy Haslam.
This came after Cleveland went through four general managers and five head coaches in eight seasons.
In several seasons, dead cap spending was minimal when compared to what Haslam paid prior GMs and coaches.
Bill Belichick (1991-95) was Cleveland’s final five-year head coach.
Since the Browns’ return to the NFL in 1999, only Butch Davis and Romeo Crennel have had the opportunity to start their fourth seasons.
