JUST IN: Detroit Lions Are Set To Hijack Miami Dolphins Deal to Sign a 4-Time Pro Bowl CB In a Blockbuster Trade

The Detroit Lions have an unexpected vacancy at cornerback after Cameron Sutton was released for domestic assault charges, and one report believes they could locate an All-Pro replacement in free agency.

The Lions severed connections with Sutton when authorities in Florida stated that he was wanted on violence charges and appealed for public assistance in locating him. While the legal case is still ongoing, the Lions stated on March 21 that Sutton had been discharged.

The Lions had previously addressed their secondary with a series of free-agent signings, but they will now be forced to replace a guy who was frequently assigned to cover opponents’ top receivers. The Lions had previously addressed their secondary with a series of free-agent signings, but they will now be forced to replace a guy who was frequently assigned to cover opponents’ top receivers. Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report recommended a replacement, listing the Lions as a leading contender to sign former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard.

Lions Urged to Add Veteran Cornerback
Davenport highlighted that the Lions needed additional assistance in the secondary even before Sutton’s release, and that they may be considerably more aggressive in finding reinforcements now that he is gone.

“The cornerback position was already something of a weak spot for the Detroit Lions, and the recent release of Cameron Sutton following domestic battery charges in Florida just makes the need all the more pressing,” Davenport said in a statement.
Howard, who has made the Pro Bowl in four of his eight seasons at Miami, is coming off a season in which he recorded 45 total tackles, one interception, and 12 passes defensed. Howard, who has only appeared in two playoff games in Miami (first-round exits in 2016 and 2022, missing last year’s loss due to injury), has made it obvious that he wants to join a postseason contender next season.

“I’d rather take a pay cut to go to a team that’s going to go further in the playoffs,” Howard stated on the OGs podcast with Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem. “I got my money and all that. I’m getting to the point, like, ‘How much money do you actually need?’ My goal is always to win the Super Bowl. Do not allow money come in the way of winning the Super Bowl. Some people are paid, and some win the Super Bowl. Some individuals do both. You do both; you’re unique. I want to be different. I want to win the Super Bowl right now. I’ve already been paid, so (a Super Bowl) is what I’m looking forward to.”

Lions add another cornerback.
Even before Sutton’s departure last week, the Lions bolstered their secondary by dealing for Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis. Last season, he recorded 52 total tackles, two interceptions, and nine passes defensed.

After joining the team, Davis expressed optimism that he could be the team’s top cornerback.

“You are about to get a lockdown corner,” Davis remarked on March 13, according to Detroitlions.com’s Tim Twentyman. “You’re soon to be able to have one side [of the field], which is currently unavailable. That is what I do. I’m here to take the top receiver on any team. I am come to take the ball away.
