Heading into the summer, the Atlanta Falcons had one obvious goal in mind: to acquire a starting quarterback for 2024. GM Terry Fontenot hit the ball out of the park with the Kirk Cousins free agency signing.
Cousins, however, is 35 years old and has recently suffered a torn Achilles. In other words, there is not only some short-term risk, but he is also not Atlanta’s long-term quarterback solution. Desmond Ridder, a developmental prospect, was traded to the Arizona Cardinals, leaving Atlanta with only two quarterbacks on the roster: Cousins and Taylor Heinicke.
Signing Cousins already makes Atlanta’s offseason a huge success, but with the 2024 NFL Draft just around the corner, there’s more roster work to accomplish. As the NFL Draft on April 25 approaches, the Falcons’ front office, lead by Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris, has been working hard to finalize their draft plans, which apparently include adding another quarterback to the squad.
With only two quarterbacks on the roster, it makes sense to acquire a third. However, do not anticipate the Falcons to do so with the eighth overall pick.
Instead, they’ll most likely utilize one of their remaining seven draft picks to address the most crucial position in football. While any quarterback they choose is unlikely to see any playing action in his first two seasons, having a young developing prospect could help if Cousins is injured or simply wants to plan for the future.
