On Friday, tight end Jimmy Graham sent a lengthy, poignant letter on Instagram thanking the Saints, supporters, and the city of New Orleans. He didn’t announce he was retiring, but he was unsure of his future plans.
Graham’s post stated: “Things ended very swiftly following the season. I didn’t have time to interact with the media and express my gratitude and my feelings for what New Orleans has meant to me. Thank you for taking a risk on a kid who many thought couldn’t accomplish it. In that shirt, I had everything I needed every day. I wish our time together had lasted longer, but I’m glad for every moment.”
Following a video montage of his highlights in New Orleans, Graham extended his message:
New Orleans,
As I reflect on our great journey together, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and pride. Fourteen years ago, this city, its devoted fans, dedicated coaches, and my immensely talented teammates welcomed me with open arms, believing in a young player’s ability to contribute to the New Orleans Saints’ illustrious tradition. The belief has been the foundation of my profession, and I am eternally thankful.
There are no words to explain how grateful I am to the city of New Orleans for your unflinching support. Playing for this city was an honor that extended beyond the sport of football. It was never just about the sport or the money; it was about being a part of a community that loves football and finds joy, solace, and solidarity in it. Every time I took the field, I hoped to bring joy and victory to a community that values football more than life itself.
To the great fans, your enthusiasm and love for the game have inspired me. Your encouragement, faith, and spirit have been the soundtrack to my career. I hope that I have been able to bring you joy and pride in the same way that you have inspired and helped me succeed.
Coaches, your wisdom, patience, and belief in my abilities have helped develop me into the athlete and person I am today. Your commitment to quality and improvement, both on and off the field, has been invaluable in my development. I am profoundly grateful for every lesson, challenge, and chance you have given me.
And to my teammates, my brothers in arms, thank you for your friendship, support, and the many experiences we’ve made together. The connections we’ve established via successes and disappointments have been the pinnacle of my career. Your talent, resilience, and dedication not only propelled us to success, but also made this journey one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Looking back, I am overwhelmed with pride at what we have accomplished together. The city of New Orleans and the Saints organization have given me more than I could have hoped for. I hope I’ve been able to contribute to that legacy somehow.
Thank you, New Orleans, for believing in me. Thank you for the memories, affection, and amazing journey. Playing for this city and you, the fans, has been an honor of a lifetime… I am not sure what the future holds for me, but I am grateful for the opportunity to wear #80 again and find the end zone in the only home I know.
With my whole heart, Jimmy Graham
The Saints selected Graham in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. After five seasons in New Orleans, he moved on to play for the Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Bears before returning last season. Graham had five Pro Bowl appearances over his 13-year career. In 2013, he was chosen to the All-Pro first team and led the NFL in receiving touchdowns.
Jimmy Graham may not know what comes next, but the sky is practically the limit.
Thank you for the memories, and best wishes on your upcoming adventure.
