The Detroit Tigers had a historic weekend, sweeping the White Sox to open the 2024 season. This is the first time the Tigers have begun 3-0 since 2016.
In Detroit, the 3-0 streak marks a watershed moment for a Tigers team that hasn’t won since 2016 and hasn’t gotten off to a quick start in the A.J. Hinch era.
The sweep included a 1-0 victory on Opening Day, a 7-6 extra-innings victory on Saturday, and a 3-2 victory on Sunday, making it the first time in franchise history that the team began the season with three consecutive one-run victories.
Talk about clutch pitching (especially from the bullpen), timely hitting, and situational baseball—the Tigers demonstrated all of that over the weekend.
After all, that was the team’s mindset heading into the season. The Tigers were not projected to be a powerhouse; rather, they were supposed to be gritty and balanced. The roster includes a solid mix of veterans like Gio Urshela and Mark Canha, as well as potential breakout players like first baseman Spencer Torkelson, outfielder Riley Greene, and outfielder/designated hitter Kerry Carpenter.
That’s not to mention two potentially game-changing rookies: second baseman Colt Keith and center fielder Parker Meadows.
With a starting rotation anchored by Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal and a bullpen that was absolutely filthy over opening weekend, the Tigers have the potential to do some damage — although in a scrappy style.
“We’ll play our 27 outs, and if necessary, we’ll play 30,” Hinch told Jason Beck on Sunday. “We’ll play the entire game, and it appears like this team is determined to find a way. And that’s a great way to begin the season.”
