The Washington Commanders need a quarterback, and they have the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. There are several quarterbacks likely to go in the top ten this year, and Washington is expected to select one of them as they rebuild the franchise under the new ownership group led by Josh Harris, GM Adam Peters, and HC Dan Quinn.
This year’s SB Nation mock draft began with the predicted selection, QB Caleb Williams to the Chicago Bears. This put the Washington Commanders on the clock with the next group of quarterbacks to choose from. LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye have been ranked as 2A and 2B behind Williams, respectively, with J.J. McCarthy attempting to crack the top three.
In this year’s SBN mock draft, the Washington Commanders choose quarterback Drake Maye with the second overall choice. This was a difficult decision, and I’m glad it fell to Adam Peters’ brain trust. There were just two players considered for this pick: Maye and Jayden Daniels. Both can be projected as franchise quarterbacks, but each has weaknesses that have placed them behind Caleb Williams in most rankings.
Drake Maye started for the last two seasons at North Carolina and demonstrated all of the skills required to be a successful NFL quarterback. He possesses the stature, arm skill, and ability to complete all throws. Maye’s first season as a starter propelled him into the debate for the top quarterbacks, and despite a “slump” last season, he remained the No. 2 quarterback coming into the offseason, despite Jayden Daniels’ Heisman Trophy-winning performance.
Maye has a lot to work on in his game, beginning with his footwork. Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury leads the Washington Commanders’ new offense, which includes numerous high-level assistants who will work with Maye as he improves his game in preparation for the next level of competition. Maye is a big, mobile passer with a better ceiling than the other quarterbacks in the draft.
His 2022 and 2023 recordings showed that he trusted the route concepts and combinations (along with his protection) and let them do the work for him, with the defense and coverage deciding where he went with the ball. Maye never appeared hurried or frenzied in the pocket, and he didn’t break down and look to move unless forced to by the pass rush.
Maye has the arm skill to produce great deep throws and drive the ball with velocity when necessary. He can throw with enough pace and touch to make the correct throw within zone windows at intermediate and short levels. Maye’s athleticism and movement for a man of his size were also noticeable on his footage.
There are betting odds available for the draft, which will be displayed on DraftKings whenever they become available. Jayden Daniels has been the betting favorite for second overall, and he has been derided more by the Washington Commanders than Drake Maye. With just over three weeks left, the odds are still shifting, and there is no clear favorite.
The new Washington Commanders head management hasn’t given many hints about their preferences, and conjecture has tied them to numerous quarterbacks as people try to predict where the draft will go after the top two quarterbacks are selected.
