Anthony Joshua has been contemplating when he would retire from boxing, and it could be sooner than expected.
The 34-year-old boxer has been around for longer than you may think, and he’s had a pretty damn fantastic career, but there may be some unfinished business before the conclusion.
Still, the curtain must fall on every show, and Joshua cannot keep entering the boxing ring indefinitely, therefore he will have to quit at some point.
In an upcoming interview on The Jonathan Ross Show, which will air on ITV1 on Saturday (6 April), the boxer was asked if he was considering hanging up his gloves for ever.
Joshua’s response may be disappointing for boxing fans who expected him to stay in the ring for a long time.
“I have always said 35. “I’ll be 35 in October,” he remarked of his future retirement plans, but don’t count him out yet.
“I’m thinking about another two years, assuming my body holds up.
“I’ve set up certain businesses that I can transition into naturally which don’t rely on me being at the forefront.”
Joshua may have other fights lined up, but many boxing fans would like to see him face Tyson Fury before retiring.
Of course, Fury will have to wait because he has a battle against Oleksandr Usyk, the boxer who defeated Joshua twice in the ring, scheduled for May 18.
Fury will have to overcome that before the prospect of facing Joshua becomes a reality.
Joshua’s 35th birthday is on October 15 this year, so he’s only a few months away from reaching the age at which he claimed he’d retire, but if his body is still in good shape, he’ll be able to face Fury for another few years.
“This is one of my rivals,” Joshua stated about a possible future fight with Fury.
“This is someone I want to compete against one day, so whatever he says is kept in the back of my mind, and when the battle comes, I’ll use it as a lot of fuel.
“I think what they’re saying is be patient because you’ve got Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk for all the belts and then once that’s done hopefully I can kick down the door and get my opportunity.”
So there you have it, if you want AJ vs Fury, you’d better pray Fury beats Usyk and ends up facing Joshua.
