DEAL AGREED: Blockbuster Bills Trade Move Adds WR Talent From Texas After Stefon Diggs Trade

After Stefon Diggs’ departure, the Buffalo Bills need an impact wide receiver, while the Tennessee Titans need draft picks for the roster reconstruction centred on quarterback Will Levis.

According to one rumour, they may help each other satisfy those needs with a Day 1 trade in the NFL Draft.

In a post published on April 15, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay suggested that the Bills might trade up into Tennessee’s No. 7 overall pick, ensuring that they get one of the draft’s top receiving talents. In exchange, the Titans would receive a boatload of Day 2 selection picks, which may help infuse talent throughout the roster.

Bills Secure Top Receiver
The Bills enter the draft with a barren cupboard in the receiving corps, having traded Diggs and lost No. 2 receiver Gabe Davis to free agency. However, Kay added that this year’s selection is particularly deep at wide receiver, giving the Bills a chance to secure one of the best prospects if they move up into Tennessee’s place.

“The Bills sorely need more receiving talent after trading four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans and losing playmaker Gabriel Davis in free agency,” Kay said in a statement. “Buffalo would be nearly guaranteed one of the best receivers—the Bleacher Report Scouting Department has Marvin Harrison Jr., Rome Odunze and Malik Nabers ranked as the Nos. 1, 6 and 8 overall players in this class, respectively—by moving up to No. 7.”

However, Kay anticipated that moving up more than 20 positions from their No. 28 pick would not be inexpensive. He predicted that it will grab Buffalo’s top three picks this year (Nos. 28, 60, and 128), as well as its first-round pick in 2025.

It would also be one of the Bills’ largest draft moves in a decade. The Bills moved up to No. 4 in the 2014 draft, drafting wide receiver Sammy Watkins, then to No. 7 in 2018 to choose Josh Allen.

Brandon Beane, the Bills’ general manager, has not shied away from making draft moves, trading up in the first round in each of the previous two seasons. There appears to be encouragement from within the organization, as edge rusher Von Miller shared a social media post imploring the Bills to trade up for a receiver.

Other observers expect the Bills to trade up for a wide receiver, though not all believe they will break into the top ten. In a mock draft released on April 12, Nick Wojton of USA Today’s Bills Wire anticipated that the Bills will move up two spots to choose Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell.

After the Diggs deal was made, Beane told reporters that the Bills will seek to free agency to fill up the wide receiving corps. He also stated that there was a long time until the season began, with much more work to be done on the roster.

“I think we do have a lot of confidence in our offence, in the other players, whether it’s the receivers, the two tight ends, or the backs,” Beane said, according to the official team website. “And, listen, we don’t play games until September. I think you understand by now that I am going to turn over every stone, and that our staff will continue to look for ways to bring depth and competition to all of those rooms. So that when it comes time to play, we have a team we can be proud of, and we have a chance to win.”
