I love It In Detroit, ‘Would Love to Be Here For a Long Time’ – Detroit Lions QB on Contract Talks

Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions have made it obvious that they intend to prolong their partnership into 2024.

As he enters the final year of his deal, Goff underlined his desire to stay in Detroit and participate in the optional offseason program.

“It’s been amazing, man,” he told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “I enjoy being here and hope to stay for a long time. It’s been extremely great, as I indicated, to play in front of these supporters and offer a winning culture over the last year and a half. It’s been nice to see them go through that and to be a part of it, but we’re not satisfied or glad to be here. It’s about what happens next.

The former No. 1 overall pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 reportedly stated that his trade to Detroit was the “greatest thing that ever happened to me.” In three seasons in Detroit, Goff has adapted to Ben Johnson’s offence, earning a Pro Bowl bid in 2022 and leading the Lions to a 12-5 record and an NFC Championship Game last year.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes has expressed optimism about signing Goff to a long-term agreement, and with the quarterback also on board, a deal may be completed before the season.

“You never want to like say something,” Goff explained. “There are debates, and Brad has said what he has said to you, and I will repeat it. There have been discussions. Yeah, my agent is on top of things; he’s doing a terrific job, and I trust those individuals.”

The going pay for great starting quarterbacks is $40 million and up. The question will be how high Goff and his representatives intend to push that figure.

Goff is in the final year of his four-year, $134 million contract extension inked in 2019, counting $32.3 million against the Lions’ salary cap and a basic salary of $22.3 million in 2024. A new agreement’s structure and cash flow are just as significant as its annual average. Holmes has other signings to consider, including Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell, so protecting the club’s flexibility is critical.

When both parties are motivated to complete a transaction, it normally happens before training camp in mid-July. Still, the Lions have the option of deploying the franchise tag on Goff for the next two years if negotiations fail.
