The Chicago-Miami pipeline via Kent State can continue if the Miami football club signs Golden Flashes defensive tackle C.J. West. Miami signed edge rusher Marquise Lightfoot and defensive tackle Justin Scott from Chicago’s 2024 class. West is originally from the Chicago suburb of LaGrange Park.
West has 110 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, one pass defence, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 39 games during four seasons at Kent State. West has one season of eligibility remaining after appearing in just three games during the 2022 COVID season.
West is the 287th overall transfer and the 30th defensive lineman in the 2024 portal. According to his X account, West received offers from more than ten schools. Miami is likely to be in contention for West. West, who stands 6’2 and weighs 315 pounds, would provide Miami with another experienced defensive tackle.
Miami has already signed C.J. Clark from North Carolina State and Marley Cook from Middle Tennessee State as transfers in 2024. Miami also welcomes back Jared Harrison-Hunte, who has appeared in 41 games and started 24 of them over the course of four seasons. Harrison-Hunte returns for his fifth season, having started 11 games in 2023.
On3 ranks West as the 16th-best overall available transfer and the second-best transfer DT. Clark is the 333rd overall transfer and 32nd defensive tackle, while Cook is the 147th overall transfer and 14th defensive tackle in the 2024 cycle. Based on his transfer and DT rankings, West’s skill would complement Clark and Cook’s.
West has played eight games against Power Conference teams in his career. The two greatest games for the West versus Power Conference opponents were five tackles, 1.5 TFLs, and one sack against Texas A&M in 2021 and four tackles, one TFL, and one sack in 2022. West has demonstrated he can compete with big conference opponents.
