Shaka Toney, the Washington Commanders’ defensive end, was one of five players restored by the NFL on Thursday after being suspended last season for breaching the league’s gambling policy.
Four free agents, including outside linebacker Rashod Berry, wide receiver Quintez Cephus, safety CJ Moore, and defensive tackle Demetrius Taylor, can now sign with teams.
The NFL’s gambling policy prohibits players, coaches, team officials, and league workers from betting on NFL games, placing bets at team facilities or hotels, or having someone else place a wager on their behalf.
Cephus and Moore were both players of the Detroit Lions in April 2023, when they were suspended for the season. Toney was also suspended last April. Berry was with the Indianapolis Colts, and Taylor was a free agent when they were suspended last June.
Toney, a 2021 seventh-round pick, earned 1½ sacks with Washington over two seasons.
Cephus had 60 catches for 568 yards and four touchdowns with the Lions over three seasons. Moore appeared in 56 games for Detroit from 2019 to 22.
The Lions terminated Cephus and Moore immediately after their punishments were announced, and the Colts did the same with Berry.
