Things can’t stay this horrible long, right?
That’s what the Minnesota Twins will try to find out on Friday night against the Detroit Tigers. It’s the team’s second series against its AL Central opponents, after the first ended in a tie.
Minnesota’s last series versus the Tigers was also the last time fans felt good about the squad. Last Saturday, the Twins swept Detroit in a doubleheader, scoring 15 runs and appearing to be waking up.
As it turned out, that was only a mirage.
Following that doubleheader sweep, the Twins lost their next four games, including their final series in Baltimore. Part of the reason for the team’s current slump can be traced back to its first game versus Detroit last Friday.
Carlos Correa had to exit the game in the third inning due to a side injury, which resulted in him being placed on the injured list. He won’t be available for the Twins’ second series against Detroit, but it’s a reminder of how heavily the team has been hampered by injuries this season.

On Friday, the Twins will send out Joe Ryan (0-1, 2.60 ERA) for his second start against Detroit. Here’s hope things go as well as they did the first time around, when Ryan utterly dominated the Tigers on Minnesota’s way to a doubleheader sweep.
Ryan did not receive a decision since the game went into extra innings, but he struck out 12 batters and allowed only one earned run on the afternoon. It was exactly the type of start the Twins needed from him, and it will help boost his confidence as the team’s No. 2 starter behind Pablo Lopez.
On the other side, the Tigers will start Jack Flaherty (0-1, 4.90 ERA) in his second start versus Minnesota. Flaherty, like Ryan, did not get a decision in Sunday’s triumph, but he did go seven innings against the Twins, striking out eight and allowing three runs. Minnesota’s bullpen disintegrated late in the game, resulting in Flaherty’s loss, but the Twins will seek to break their current four-game losing streak against the pitcher who started it.

After a dismal road trip, the Twins have returned home to Target Field, where things haven’t gone any better. That’s what happens when a team is 6-11, but ideally they can begin to improve not only their home record but also their performances versus AL Central opponents.
