Under first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans and rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, the Houston Texans made it to the playoffs considerably earlier than expected.
Houston defeated the Cleveland Browns in the Wild Card Round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs before falling to the Baltimore Ravens in the subsequent round.
Despite the playoff exit, the Texans and their fans should be pleased with the organization’s trajectory, as it appears to be poised to contend for many years.
General manager Nick Caserio saw an opportunity to go all-in on the current squad, making blockbuster trades for Joe Mixon and Stefon Diggs, giving Stroud even more firepower to work with.
The transaction for Mixon came as a complete surprise to the league, and Caserio finally broke his silence on how it came about via Around The NFL.
“Joe was scheduled to be released. He was a player that we evaluated and thought could help our club in some way,” Caserio explained. “So, to answer the earlier question, you get on the phone and talk to the staff. Hey, we’d be interested. Would you guys be willing to give up a selection, or if we did, would you be interested? That’s how the trade was completed.”
Houston has used a rotation of Devin Singletary and Dameon Pierce, but Mixon is anticipated to take over as the offense’s top back.
Mixon, a powerful runner and strong pass catcher, adds variety to the backfield and should be a key contributor for a Texans squad that appears poised to compete for a Super Bowl title.
