Carlos Correa will not be ready to return from the injured list when he becomes eligible on Tuesday, according to Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic, who on Monday published a list of updates on the Minnesota Twins’ various players who are currently suffering ailments.
According to Gleeman, Correa may be able to return to baseball soon, but the Twins are not pushing him back to avoid aggravating his right intercostal muscle strain. Meanwhile, Royce Lewis is “heading in the right direction,” but there is no timetable for his recovery from a strained quad. However, the really awful news Monday is that the back spasms that sidelined prospect Brooks Lee for 2-3 weeks to begin the season are actually a herniated disc.
According to Gleeman, Lee is “about three weeks into a two-month rehab plan,” and the Twins are optimistic that he will return this season. That’s a huge setback, as Lee, one of the organization’s top prospects, would have been an ideal call-up choice following the injuries to Lewis and Correa.
The good news is that Max Kepler could be activated from the injured list as early as Monday, joining the team for a four-game series against the White Sox at Target Field. And flame-throwing closer Jhoan Duran will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A St. Paul after starting the season on the injured list due to an oblique strain.
“I mean, there is urgency here,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said following Sunday’s loss to the Tigers, which dropped the Twins to 7-13. “We cannot continue to play like this and expect everything to be fine. We’ll have to be willing to make roster changes, discover new methods to use players, and figure certain things out.”
Minnesota is now eight games behind the American League-leading Cleveland Guardians, who have a 16-6 start.
