Houston wide receiver Sam Brown and Oregon State running back Damien Martinez are high-priority transfers for the Miami football program, adding explosiveness to the Hurricanes’ offence. Miami was 70th nationally in 2023, with only 14 plays of 30 yards or more.
Miami’s transfer portal clearly focuses on explosiveness. Quarterback Cam Ward, who came to Miami from Washington State in January, is anticipated to increase Miami’s offensive consistency and explosiveness. Ward would benefit significantly from adding Brown and Martinez.
Ward was 11th nationally in 2023 with 52 completions of 20 yards or more. Miami ranked 39th with 48 completions of 20 or more yards as a team in 2023. Miami was 59th nationally in 2023, with 65 rushes of 10 yards or more. Martinez finished 14th in the nation with 39 runs of 10 yards or more in 2023.
Henry Parrish, who has since transferred to Mississippi, led Miami with 24 runs of ten yards or more in 2024. Parrish averaged 6.25 yards per run in 2023. Miami averaged 5.12 yards per run in 2023. Martinez averaged 6.12 yards per rush last year.
According to 247Sports’ Clint Brewster, Martinez possesses “an elite blend of size, speed, cutting ability, and toughness.”Martinez, who stands 6’0 and weighs 237 pounds, would be the biggest running back on Miami’s 2024 roster. At 6’2 and 225 pounds, Mark Fletcher is now Miami’s biggest running back. Martinez would give Miami both bulk and speed.
Brown, who stands 6’2 and weighs 185 pounds, would provide Miami both size and quickness. Brown recorded 62 receptions for 815 yards and three touchdowns in 2023. Brown’s breakout season was as a redshirt freshman in 2022, under current Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.
Brown recorded 41 receptions for 471 yards and four touchdowns in 2022. Brown was a crucial and explosive player in 2023, recording 33 first-down receptions, 20 catches of 15 or more yards, and seven of 25 or more yards. Miami needs a third wide receiver to join Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George. Brown would provide a track record of production.
Restrepo had 52 first-down receptions in 2023, including 32 catches of 15 yards or more and ten of 25 yards or more. In 2023, George had 33 receptions for first downs, including 18 for 15 yards or more and 12 for 25 yards or more. Expect Miami’s dynamic passing offence to increase during the 2024 season.
