On Friday, the New Orleans Saints selected a player in the second round who will carry a chip on his shoulder.
Most expected Ga’Quincy “Kool-Aid” McKinstry, a University of Alabama alumni, to be drafted in the first round of the NFL.
In the second round, the former Crimson Tide cornerback ranked 41st overall. He has a point to prove in New Orleans, showing everyone, especially the Saints, who passed on him in the first round, that they were mistaken. McKinstry joins former Alabama standouts Brian Branch, Xavier McKinney, Trevon Diggs, and Landon Collins as first-round prospects who fell.
Branch, McKinney, and Diggs are thriving in the National Football League. Collins is a free agent, however he has spent eight seasons with the New York Giants (2015-18), the Washington Redskins/Football Team (2019-21), and the Giants again in 2022.
Robert Griffin III, a former Baylor University Heisman Trophy winner, believes the Saints have found a’real one’ in McKinney.
Griffin, the No. 2 overall choice in the 2012 NFL Draft, spent eight seasons with the Washington Redskins (2012-15), Cleveland Browns (2016), and Baltimore Ravens (2018-20) before retiring due to injury. Griffin, an ESPN analyst and host of the podcast “RG3 and The Ones,” said on X why New Orleans should be enthusiastic about McKinstry.
He was named first-team All-SEC twice (2022, 2023) at Alabama and first-team All-American in 2023.
McKinstry won two SEC Championships (2021, 2023) and made two College Football Playoff berths.
