Miami’s football team added its fourth transfer addition in less than 24 hours on Sunday night, when Houston wide receiver Sam Brown committed. Brwon was preceded by Oregon State running back Damien Martinez, Louisville linebacker Jaylin Alderman, and Marshall cornerback Dyani Hill.
Alderman, Brown, and Martinez are projected starters. The arrivals of Brown and Martinez are significant improvements to the Miami offence. Brown ranked eighth in the Big XII in 2023, averaging 67.9 receiving yards per game on 62 grabs for 815 yards and three touchdowns.
Brown ended in the top ten in most explosive receiving metrics, with 33 catches of 10 or more yards and 12 of 20 or more. Miami will feature an exceptional receiving corps, including Brown, Xavier Restrepo, and Jacolby George. As the fourth and fifth receivers, Isaiah Horton and JoJo Trader will play important roles in the rotation.
Brown, who transferred from West Virginia, developed under current Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson in 2022. Brown has 41 receptions for 471 yards and four touchdowns in his one season with Dawson at Houston. Brown improved to 62 receptions for 815 yards and three touchdowns in 2023.
Brown, who stands 6’2 and weighs 195 pounds, is the second tallest wide receiver on Miami’s roster. Horton stands 6’4. With Brown and Horton on the roster, Miami’s red zone performance could improve in 2024. Miami ranked 90th in 2023, converting 57.69% of its red zone attempts into touchdowns.
The signings of Brown, Martinez, and Cam Ward, together with George and Restrepo, make Miami’s offence one of the most accomplished and experienced in the country. Brown and Ward began to develop chemistry while working out in Houston earlier this month. Miami’s offence should be dramatically improved by 2024.
Brown is Miami’s 12th transfer overall and fifth on offence in 2024. In addition to Brown, Martinez, and Ward, Miami signed backup quarterback Reese Poffenbarger and centre Zach Carpenter. In just 24 hours, the Miami transfer class jumped nearly 20 spots to 16th in the nation.
