Former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup has agreed to accept a one-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders worth up to $3 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
As a result, speculation regarding a possible blockbuster trade has resurfaced.
Davante Adams, a six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, has been the target of trade rumours for much of the offseason, and understandably so. Adams is 31 and not getting any younger.
The Raiders also don’t appear to be a Super Bowl contender, especially after failing to acquire a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Gardner Minshew, a veteran, is currently the most likely starter for the 2024 season. Although he did not perform poorly in 2023, throwing for 3,305 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions with the Colts, it is difficult to see him making Las Vegas a serious competitor.
Adams shot down trade rumours earlier this month.
“If I wanted to be gone, I’d be gone by now,” Adams remarked, according to Tashan Reed of The Athletic. “This is where I want to be.”
However, things could have changed since the end of this year’s draft.
The Raiders added two key offensive players in tight end Brock Bowers and guard Jackson Powers-Johnson, but both are long-term members of the team.
Is Adams? If not, Las Vegas would be wise to trade him for future draft money, which might be utilized to find its next quarterback.
Minshew would still have wide receivers Jakobi Meyers and Gallup, as well as tight ends Bowers and Michael Mayer, and the Raiders could continue to plan for the future.
What the Raiders would get in return is debatable, but Adams showed no signs of slowing down in 2023, totaling 103 catches for 1,144 yards and eight touchdowns. A receiver of his calibre may be quite useful at this point in the offseason.
