Rams News Update: Rams Head Coach Sean McVay Responds To Matthew Stafford’s Contract Controversy

Will Matthew Stafford remain a Ram well into his football retirement?

According to Matt Gordon of NFL.com, Stafford is aiming for longer-term security after the 2024 season, when he will earn $31 million in guaranteed payments. He signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension with Los Angeles one month after the Rams won the Super Bowl in 2022. The contract covers him through the 2026 season, but the 36-year-old’s salary is not guaranteed in 2025 or 2026.

According to CBS Sports’ John Breech, head coach Sean McVay addressed his top signal caller’s apparent dissatisfaction with a scrum of reporters at a recent press conference.

“I’ve had a good dialogue with Matthew,” McVay said. “We’ll keep those things in house, but he’s been working with our guys and we’ll keep those things in house.”

“We’ll tackle it one day at a time. “We’ll see,” McVay continued about the contract situation. “So, we’ll try to figure it out. There’s nothing more important than ensuring that he feels appreciated and understands how much we adore him and want him to lead the way. I believe the commitment he seeks can be reciprocated, and we want to work on determining how to do so.

Stafford has experienced various health concerns over the years in Los Angeles. In 2022, he missed eight games, and the Rams did not make the playoffs. Last year, with Stafford healthy, Los Angeles returned to the postseason, finishing 10-7 and advancing to the wild card game.
