Carlos Correa will return to the Minnesota Twins’ lineup for the first time since April 12th.
Correa was placed on the 10-day IL after suffering a right intercostal strain in a defeat to the Detroit Tigers, and he has been out of play for the past 16 days. That streak is anticipated to end on Monday when the Twins face the Chicago White Sox, but the move requires a roster slot to be cleared in order for Correa to return.
The Twins initially called up Jair Camargo to take Correa’s slot, but he has since been optioned back to Triple-A. There were rumours that Jose Miranda might return to the Saints to make way for Correa, but Austin Martin ended up getting the short straw.
Twins option Austin Martin to create place for Carlos Correa’s return from the IL.
According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, Martin is anticipated to be sent down to make place for Correa’s return.
“The Twins are expected to option rookie Austin Martin to Triple-A St. Paul to make space for Correa, who’s been on the IL since April 12 with a right intercostal strain,” Hayes stated in an email.
Minnesota later verified the report, stating that Martin had been optioned.
Someone had to go, and it’s unfortunate that Martin is the one the music stopped on. Sending him down will not be the Twins’ final roster move to create place for a marquee player returning from injury.
Jhoan Duran is in Chicago, and he is expected to be activated very soon. Whether it happens during this series against the White Sox or the next one against the Red Sox remains to be seen.
The Twins made no announcement on Monday, implying that they may be waiting to see how the first game of the series in Chicago goes before determining who to send down. It’s a move that will take place shortly, but who will join Martin in pulling the short straw?
Kody Funderburk appears to be being circled as someone who will have to move aside when Duran returns, although that decision has not been finalized yet.
For the time being, it is more important to celebrate someone who is here rather than worrying about someone who will not be. Correa’s return to the lineup couldn’t come at a better time, as the offence looks radically different — and more vibrant — than it did when he was placed on the injured list.
Minnesota is hitting.348/.406/.602 and scoring 8.1 runs per game, and that’s likely to get even better with the combination of another series against a weak White Sox team and the fact that Correa’s.306/.432/.444 slash-line is being added back into the mix.
