BREAKING NEWS: The Miami Football Program And The Rebels Are Reportedly Vying For The Services Of The Highest-Rated Edge Rusher Available On The Transfer Portal.

According to a source from 247Sports via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, edge rusher Tyler Baron, who committed to Mississippi in December then moved from Tennessee to Louisville in January, is back in the portal and will choose between Miami and the Rebels. Elijah Alston, was previously added by Miami for 2024 as a Marshall edge rusher.

Alston joined Louisville for spring practice prior to logging onto the transfer site the previous week. Baron will meet with Mississippi coaches at his house later this week after visiting Miami over the weekend. At Knoxville Catholic, Baron attended high school in the shadow of Neyland Stadium.

There are currently no estimates indicating which team, has a better chance of signing Baron. According to Jackson, Baron will likely be sidelined for several more weeks due to an ailment that is not yet known. As the 118th prospect, fourth strong-side defensive end, and fourth recruit in Tennessee, Baron signed with Tennessee in the 2020 class.

During his collegiate career, Baron has amassed 101 tackles, 27.0 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, three pass breakups, a forced fumble, a recovered fumble that was returned for a score. With 28 tackles, 10.5 TFLs, 6.0 sacks, two pass breakups, and a fumble return for a touchdown in 2023, Baron had his greatest season to date.
According to On3, Baron is the fifth-best 2024 edge rusher and the 28th-ranked transfer in the portal. Baron is now the finest edge rusher on the site and the fourth-best transfer overall according to the On3 rankings. According to 247Sports team rankings, the Miami transfer portal class is ranked 10th in the country.

According to Pro Football Focus, Baron was ranked as the sixth-best player in the winter transfer marketplace. Baron ranked fifth among edge rushers in the SEC in 2023 with a pressure rate of 17% per PFF and 41 pressures. Baron had 12 tackles that ended in a loss or for no gain, ranking seventh nationally.

With Mesidor returning from a foot injury that ended his 2023 season after three games, Baron would provide Miami with more depth at the position. Miami is the youngest edge rusher in the group, behind Mesidor, Bain, and Alston. Adding Baron would give Miami one of the best groups of edge rushers nationally.

Miami returns starting edge rushers Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor in 2024 and adds Marshall transfer Elijah Alston at the position. Adding Baron would allow Miami to move Bain and Mesidor inside and play Alston and Baron on the edge on passing downs to get the four best pass rushers on the field.
