In terms of injuries, the New York Yankees are currently having a hard time getting by.
Only two American League clubs have 20 victories this season, including New York, which has enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2024 campaign. Even though this is the case, injuries have been a major factor in the season thus far. Similar to previous season, New York has had a ton of injuries, but they have managed to overcome them.
The Yankees could use more depth right now, and this probably won’t last forever. According to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, utility guy Jon Berti appeared to be getting close to making a comeback, but on Wednesday he experienced an injury that prevented him from going to his minor league rehab assignment.
“(Third baseman) Jon Berti won’t play in a Minor League rehab game (Wednesday) because ‘his back locked up on him,’ Aaron Boone said,” Hoch stated. “The hope is that Berti can play tomorrow.”
Although it’s encouraging that he should be able to play again on Thursday, the setback with his back is worrisome. This season, there have been other instances where a Yankees player was ready to start a rehab assignment when they were suddenly sidelined.
Similar circumstances befell another utility player D.J. LeMahieu, who was benched after it was determined that he had foot edema. Berti should be able to return to action on Thursday if that turns out not to be the case.
