The way an MLB umpire handled the Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton’s apparent injury on Wednesday has drawn criticism.
Buxton seemed to have a muscle injury while sprinting to second base in the Chicago White Sox game on Wednesday. First base umpire Rob Drake reportedly yelled “let’s go” at Buxton as he slowly departed the field, hoping to persuade him to move a little faster.
On the broadcast, Drake’s cry, “let’s go,” is audible as Buxton approaches the dugout gradually. The remarks stopped when trainers approached the field of play to examine Buxton, but the same voice continued to imply that Buxton was delaying the game.
It would be hard to think that Drake was uninformed that Buxton had pulled up lame while running the bases. Drake appears quite unprofessional during the entire incident because Buxton was still making every effort to leave the field.
It’s unclear what action MLB will take regarding Drake, but another high-profile incident that casts doubt on its umpires will not be welcomed by the league.
