On Friday, the Miami Hurricanes secured a commitment from former Michigan State starter Simeon Barrow Jr., one of the top defensive tackles available through the transfer portal. Last season, Barrow played in 12 games and started 10 for Michigan State, totaling 36 tackles, 5.5 for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He received an honourable mention for All Big 10. Barrow, who stands 6-3 and weighs 296 pounds, recorded 110 tackles (including 18.5 for loss), 10.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in three seasons at Michigan State.
He has started 10 games each of the last three seasons. Barrow had also considered LSU and Missouri. FSU and Texas both made a push. Barrow told on3.com that he enjoyed his visit to UM’s campus earlier this week and believes the Canes have a staff that will help him grow. Jason Taylor, the co-defensive line coach, is among those on the staff. UM desperately needed defensive tackles after losing Leonard Taylor and Branson Deen to the NFL and Jared Harrison-Hunte to the transfer portal. Prior to signing Barrow on Friday, the Canes had five seasoned defensive tackles:
CJ Clark (who transferred from North Carolina State this offseason), Marley Cook (who transferred from Middle Tennessee State this summer), Anthony Campbell, Josh Horton, and Ahmad Moten. Moten had 129 defensive snaps for UM last season, Horton 32, and Campbell 8. Three highly recruited defensive tackles, including five-star Chicago prospect Justin Scott, will enroll at UM in May. Artavius Jones, a four-star defensive tackle prospect, is also a standout in UM’s incoming class. Keep in mind that both starting defensive ends, Akheem Mesidor and Reuben Bain, can play tackle. However, they will eventually be required.
The Hurricanes had a very successful week in the transfer portal, signing Oregon State running back Damien Martinez, Marshall cornerback Dyoni Hill, Houston receiver Sam Brown, and Louisville linebacker Jaylin Alderman. All six of the visitors to campus in the last week have committed to UM, with the exception of former Tennessee edge rusher Tyler Baron, who is still considering his choices. Barrow, who had six sacks last season, is still being pursued by UM. Miami may use more help at edge rusher, safety, and possibly another cornerback. However, the roster is certainly stronger than it was a week ago.
