Duke Johnson, a running back who played in the NFL for eight seasons, retired Sunday.
After setting a record as the University of Miami’s all-time leading rusher, he was drafted in the third round by the Cleveland Browns in 2015. He has played for four NFL clubs, his most recent appearance coming in 2022 with the Buffalo Bills.
On Instagram, he stated, “8 years 4 teams with one goal in mind: create a better life for my family…” I never imagined being the all-time leading rusher at my dream school or ranking among the top athletes to have come out of South Florida. I only wanted the chance to play a game and offer a better life for my family, and I was able to accomplish it. I’d want to thank each team for the opportunity to play and represent your company, as well as all of the fans who have supported me through the ups and downs.”
He also expressed thanks, adding, “Last but not least, I want to thank my GOD for allowing me to embark on this adventure and finish it in the same health that I began it in. With that said, I am officially retiring from the NFL. I hope I made a lasting impression on you that goes beyond football.
Johnson, 30, has 5,135 total yards and 23 touchdowns in his career, having played for the Browns, Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, and Bills. At the University of Miami, he is still the all-time leading rusher with 3,519 yards.
