The following days are expected to be busy and churny for the Broncos’ back end roster.
The team began making moves on Wednesday by dismissing quarterback Ben DiNucci, according to a source with The Denver Post.
DiNucci later confirmed the transfer on social media, stating, “All part of the journey!!” I’m excited about what’s to come.”
DiNucci spent the entire 2023 season on the practice squad before being promoted to the gameday roster three times, the maximum allowed. His position on the roster shifted this offseason, when Denver traded for Zach Wilson and then drafted Bo Nix in the first round of last month’s draft, adding two players to a squad that already had Jarrett Stidham.
DiNucci, by the way, signed with the Broncos a year ago after trying out at the team’s rookie minicamp. This year’s minicamp begins Friday and will include draft picks, undrafted signings, tryout players, and a few veterans.
As a result, this weekend will see a lot of naturally occurring roster movement.
With DiNucci released, the Broncos now have 80 active players and unsigned draft picks combined. According to the Post, Denver has 14 signed college free agents, implying that at least a few trades will be made to get the total to 90 before the minicamp begins.
More moves are likely to occur during or after minicamp if a rookie or veteran tryout player secures a spot on the offseason roster.
In addition to the three quarterbacks on the roster, Denver has Colorado School of Mines standout John Matocha scheduled to attend the weekend minicamp as a tryout participant.
DiNucci exemplifies how helpful a rookie minicamp weekend can be for athletes who aren’t actually rookies. He played three games for Dallas in 2020 before moving on to the Seattle Sea Dragons of the XFL, where he had an outstanding season last spring. He used that performance to earn a minicamp tryout invitation from Denver, was signed right after, and spent the whole 2023 NFL season on the team’s practice squad.
